Austin Editor Gains Dual Citizenship with Travel Rewards

Katherine Fan, an Austin, Texas-based personal finance editor, recently secured dual U.S.-Taiwanese citizenship during a trip to Taipei, leveraging credit card points and miles to minimize costs.

Using 93,500 Delta SkyMiles, 87,500 Air Canada Aeroplan points, and 88,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, Fan booked business-class flights and a stay at the Sheraton Grand Taipei, spending only $150 out-of-pocket for a $6,700 trip.

The second-generation American, whose parents are from Taiwan, finalized her citizenship after Taiwan eased residency rules in 2024, strengthening her connection to her heritage.
